Commuter Agreement Between GDR and Poland

In the mid-1960s, an official working agreement is established between the German Democratic Republic and one of the member states of the Comecom (Comecon = The Council for Mutual Economic Assistance), namely Poland. Primarily, Polish women are recruited to start working in state-owned enterprises of the GDR. In order to save accommodation costs, the GDR recruits primarily people living close to the border so they can commute between the two countries every day.
To save on accommodation costs, people are recruited who live close to the border with the GDR and can therefore commute every day.
