From the epicenter of today’s global migration debates, FROM HERE (previously entitled With Wings and Roots) is a documentary film that follows four young people who represent the future of global citizenry.
Filmed over a decade in two of the world’s largest immigration countries–the U.S. and Germany–From Here captures an international generation’s fight for belonging in an era of rising nationalism. 90 min.
With Wings and Roots is an initiative of media makers, activists, scholars, educators and cultural organizers working in the US and Europe. We collaborate to reframe the migration and integration debates through storytelling, critical histories, and creative interventions.
We cordially invite you to the film screening The Right to Have Rights followed by a discussion on April 4 at Stadtlabor Göttingen.
Migration was a hotly contested topic in the 2025 federal elections, while the last few years have already been characterized by stricter laws. The voices of migrants and refugees hardly play a role in this, although they are the ones who are primarily affected by it.
There are currently 12 million people living in Germany who are not allowed to vote because they are not German citizens. 1.5 million of them were born here, many more have been living in this country for years or even decades and have long been part of this society. Not all of them have secure residency, some only have a tolerated stay permit or are even stateless.
The short film tells of the personal and collective struggles of migrants, BIPoC and Roma and Sinti for citizenship, the right to stay, political participation and equal rights.
Afterwards, we will discuss the current situation and how we can stand up for more justice.
A joint event by Roma Center e.V./ Roma Antidiscrimination Network, Stadtlabor, AK Asyl Göttingen, boat people projekt and Entwicklungspolitisches Informationszentrum Göttingen.
