Prof. Dr. Mihir Nayak recalls the day he realized he would never be a “good German”: after preparing perfectly for a castle visit, he was blamed by a stranger when the ticket clerk’s computer failed. He explains that, no matter how hard people try to integrate, their looks, skin color or background will always set them apart in the eyes of the majority society. His message is twofold: stop assimilating to the point of losing your identity, and Germany should accept people for who they are rather than judging them by appearance.
